Planning your residential locksmith request

Help with home lockouts, rekeying after a move, damaged locks and replacement door hardware. The right option depends on whether the lock still works, who has copies of the key and whether you want to change how the door operates.

Include the number of exterior doors, whether any keys still work, the lock brand if visible, and whether you own or rent the property. A photo of the door edge and both sides of the lock helps identify compatible hardware. A tenant should arrange the necessary owner or property-manager authorization.

Rekey or replace?

Rekeying changes which key operates a compatible existing lock. Replacement changes the hardware itself. A working lock with unwanted key copies may only need rekeying; a damaged lock, incompatible cylinders or a desired hardware upgrade may require replacement.

Check the door as well as the lock

A deadbolt that catches can be a door-alignment problem. Explain whether the key turns with the door open, whether the door rubs the frame and when the problem started. This helps distinguish a cylinder problem from hinges, strike alignment or other door hardware.

Plan smart-lock installation

Check the door thickness, bore and backset against the manufacturer requirements before choosing a smart lock. Decide who needs access, how temporary codes will be removed and how you will enter if batteries are depleted. Keep any physical backup key somewhere accessible outside the locked home.
